It used to be that you could copy user profiles as easy as copying any other folder but times have changed.  This article will cover initially the case where I want to move my windows 7 computer to a new domain and keep all my user settings, files, and email.

  1. Research
    1. This article describes using the Profile Manager in Windows NT 4.  Article.
    2. This one describes using a User Transfer from 1 domain to another but requires domain trust to be setup. Article.
    3. It looks like I will be testing the USMT but actually using the ADMT eventually.
  2. Method 1 – using the Files and settings transfer wizzard that comes with Windows 7
    1. I used the wizzard to create a transfer file for my domain profile.
    2. I them used it to copy that file to a local user.
    3. All looked good except that the Outlook settings did not come over.  I wanted to not need to set up accounts, rules, and signatures again so I will try method 2 below.
  3. Method 2 – use the User State Migration Tool that comes with the Windows 7 AIK
    1. Downloaded the AIK from Microsoft.  It is a 1 GB ISO that needs to be burned to a DVD and installed.
    2. It appears that this will have the same limits as Method 1 as the SID of the account is diferent and not translated but I’ll try anyway since it looks simpler than using the ADMT.
  4. Method 3 – use the Active Directory Migration Tool
    1. This is what I wound up using as it seemed to work good on 1 test box and I am moving Domain users to a new domain.
    2. I need to test once more on a box with Outlook installed.  My primary workstation?  Wish me luck.
    3. I set up a 2 way trust between the domains
    4. I installed ADMT on the new Domain controller.
    5. I magrated the users along with the SID History.
    6. Then on the workstation:
      1. login as the new domain user.
      2. logoff and logon as a local administrator.
      3. run regedit and go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Profile List
      4. Find the 2 users.
      5. Change the profile path on the new to equil the old
      6. reboot
      7. login as the new domain user
      8. all is good!

Introduction

Some of the hardest questions I get regularly are related to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) or performance.  It is a hard question to answer because this is a complex process having many steps that are all related and need to be taken 1 at a time while still keeping the big picture in mind.  I will start with an outline here and add to it and create new lessons over time.

Search Engine Optimization

comes in several flavors.  We will concentrate primarily on what is generally referred to as Organic SEO.  But we will later cover some Paid SEO options like Pay Per Click, and Paid Advertising.  We will not cover the Black Hat SEO just because, for the most part, it hurts all internet users similar to SPAM E-mail.

Organic Search Engine Optimization

is the art of creating a web site that search engines like without paying for special treatment or using tricks to fool the search engines.  This should be the first thing you do to market your web site on the internet.

PPC or Paid Advertising

While not technically search engine optimization, this is a method to help jump start your site or help keep it at the top of searches for highly competitive keywords.

Black Hat Search Engine Optimization

is the practice of trying to determine what the search engine likes and delivering it to the search engine without nessacarily delivering the same thing to normal visitors.  It makes the searches less accurate and can be grounds for getting your site banned from the search engines.

  1. First steps
    1. Research and determine desired keywords.
    2. Choose a domain name.
    3. Create site.
  2. Now lets get started
    1. Determine a budget
    2. Register with search engines
    3. Setup friends and cross links
  3. Monitor progress
    1. Search Engine Ranking reports
    2. Directory Listings
    3. Incomming Links

These WordPress Plugins have been used and tested by TranSoft labs.

They are recomended for sites used in the following categories.

  1. All Sites
    1. W3 Total Cache – This is a little complex to fine tune but the default settings will help.
    2. WordPress SEO – By Yost.  Again needs some setup but once setup, it will provide a consistent interface to the search engines.
    3. Email Encoder Bundle – Prevents spam bots from harvesting email addresses from your site.  Easy to setup.  Just check everything.
  2. If you want community participation (Comments, Forum, Posts, etc.)
    1. Spam Free WordPress – This plugin has a good method of preventing annonymous SPAM psting.  You can get more participation if you don’t require a verified email to post but then spambots can flood you with trash.  This plugin requires the non registered user to copy and past a password to post.  I like it better than CAPTCHA as I have dificulty reading them sometimes.  Untill the spambots figure it out I’m giong with it.
    2. Janrain Engage – Totally awsom login plugin that lets your users login with thier existing account on Facebook, Yahoo, Google, AOL, or OpenID.

How to manage user in WordPress:

Background:

Users are anyone that can make changes to the web site.  There will always be at least a couple of users with administrative privleges to manage users.  One will usually be dennis at TranSoft Labs and another for the web site owner.  There may be more if you have several people making updates to the site in your organization.  There are several rolls that users can have.  If you do not allow comments, then all of your users will probably be internal and have rights to create and edit content.  If you do allow comments and self registration, you may also have many external users that can leave comments.

If you would like to allow users to use thier existing FaceBook, Google, AOL, Yahoo, or OpenID accounts, there is a plugin installed to do this.  We will just need to activate and set it up for you.

Roles:  See http://wpapprentice.com/videos/blogging/wordpress-user-roles-explained/

  • Administrator – All permissions
  • Editor – Full content content control  no user or display control
  • Author – Edit thier own posts and comments.  No pages categories or
  • Contributor – submit posts but not publish
  • Subscriber – leave comments and modify own profile.
